Children of Ireland

An ocean roaring round her shores

A million shades of nature’s green

A magic that invites, implores

That, Alas, I’ve never seen

But there’s a spirit set in me

That spans beyond the drink and spud

A strength to face catastrophe

A joy that lives within my blood

The tales told well by my relations

Of a never ending pride

Of over coming tribulations

With hearts and smiles that both grew wide

You can hear it in the music

And see it in their sparkling eyes

When hardship comes we will live through it

For a fighting spirit never dies

So laugh plainly and loudly so

And gather friends as oft you can

Set music to your deepest woe

Like the children of fair Ireland

Reckoning

On gallows I’ve stood

Awaiting the lever

Perhaps an escape

For one much more clever

The tightening twine

The groaning of lumber

I’m closing my eyes

Approaching my slumber

A crack then a bang

A well needed breath

I pray ne’er again

to be so close to death

“Divine Intervention!”

The preacher cries out

The people protest

But bend to his clout

His hand on my shoulder

As I’m still unsteady

I nod when he asks

“Okay son, you ready?”

I sign my soul over

to powerful hands

so that no more upon

those gallows I’d stand

Hoarder

Descending this abyss I’ve built

Ripe for excavation

It brims with muck I’ve cast aside

And yearns for sanitation

Somehow walls have been erected

And countless doors locked up so tight

I’m going to need some heavy tools

To really do this right

Rusted rotting iron

With no hole for a key

I’m forced to sit and ponder

How old these rooms could be

What lies beyond the welded doors

With what can they be broken

Just what lies in wait for me

Once they are finally open

Each door feels like a memory

Though I cannot place it

Perhaps these barriers remain

For I’ve not the strength to face it

I feel my way through endless halls

Each door like solid rock

And finally it comes to me

So I ball my fist and knock

Long Time No See

I was so close

You were so far

from my mind that day

for the first time in ages

I had finally broken through the film of you

Breathed air that didn’t smell like you

Lived a day of my life all my own

No seeping streams of pain laced in my happiness

None of your clouds rolling past my sunshine

My smile was finally genuine, not fading to sadness at its end

My laugh was full and bold

untethered from memories of laughing with you

When my eyes closed, your face was gone

just like you, long months ago

but then –

Caller

You have not yet drawn me out

You have not yet reached inside

Upon the steps you stand

Staunchly with your pride

You hem and haw and tap

And dart your eyes about

Safe now from the rain

But still you are without

Within the hearth awaits you

With frames still left to fill

Yet the threshold still abates you

Though your heartbeats trill

The lights within are dimming

Yet on my steps you strut

And though our heads are swimming

The door is groaning shut

Resignation

Regrettably I must inform you

I cannot go on

My faculties are scrambled

my mind is far and wan

My fantasies are blending

into my conscious brain

When focus is penultimate

my mind is still free range

So I must keep my distance

and drive you from my thoughts

Before you there were thoughts

too precious to be bought

So please be gone temptation

I have a life to live

One that couldn’t e’er progress

with what I’ve left to give

Sentimental Sunday: Figurehead

Clawless and clueless
he swipes at his prey
but somehow they feared him
and all shrank away

Giving their power
for it seemed of no use
they abided the roaring
and took the abuse

He wanted to lead them
they all fell in line
not seeing the danger
though they would in time

They blocked the cave mouth
please don’t go inside
but they were the victims
of their fears and their pride

So into the maw
they all seemed to vanish
and those who would help
were chastised and banished

In darkness they cowered
convinced by his roar
not realizing there was
no light anymore

Bias

The bursting mouths of truth

That douse the puzzled brows

Sealed throughout their suffering

But no more can allow

And as the words escape

To you it sounds of screams

For you never needed bravery

To speak about your dreams

Of you they were expected

Solicited in fact

But never would its burden

Be thrust upon your back

The spoils excavated

From blood and perspiration

As your pockets bulged

As your cruelty held your station

Even once the bells presented

Ringing out in freedom

You tried with might for years

To ensure no one  could see them

Now that a subtle glint

Has blossomed to a shine

You mournfully lament the days

That all was naught but thine

Platitudes

Crossed hearts still break their promises

Changed minds can change again

We all become accomplices

When we fight another’s sin

Blind eyes a respite given

in order to survive

We beg and bend and bargain

to keep our hope alive

Possess yourself in patience

and turn your head away

for surely things will soon make sense

but surely not today

Molten

I was cast of the fiercest spirits

Strong beyond the times they lived

If you were wrong then you would hear it

And all they had, was what they’d give

An endless love laced with a power

That you never could quite measure

Silence drawn out with a glower

Yet helping others was their treasure

Never did they seek for glory

Though they glowed like treasure won

Though i’m part of their great story

I merely bask in the light of their sun
